Shrove Tuesday… 1925 somewhere in rural England.

So… the rumours are true. Professor Darkly, the elusive and thoroughly evil gentleman genius, has once again been up to his eyebrows in foul play.

Buried deep beneath the fields and leafy lanes of dear old Blighty is Professor Darkly’s latest and most impressive invention… the Machine.

The Machine is a contraption so vast and so complex it would boggle the mind of even the most forward thinking of citizens. Unfortunately the single purpose of this grand project is to sink the British Isles beneath the surrounding seas by inducing cataclysmic tremors below the ground.

With his penchant for the diabolical… the Professor has installed an ethereal guardian to protect his monstrous mechanical creation. A terrifying ghost, summoned from a nearby cemetery, roams the steel walkways high above the whirring Machine. This is the unearthly sentinel who dutifully safeguards the devilish instrument of destruction below… and it will deal ruthlessly with any uninvited, interfering do-gooders.

Both the prime minister and his majesty the king are understandably unhappy about this outrageous menace. Consequently, the British government has instructed a few of its “best people” to infiltrate and destroy the Machine. You are one of those “best people” (and coincidentally, a friend of a friend of his majesty).

Having entered the Machine… you stand inside a vast, echo-inducing chamber. Clouds of luminous vapour float high above your head and futuristic panels surround you, with their dials glowing and their lights flashing. You peer into the gloom ahead. The intimidating steel gantry stretches out before you as far as the eye can see… and below you lies the sinister and ever droning Machine.

England expects! You must plant a bomb which will destroy the Machine. You must then find a route out of there… to safety and the plaudits of your fellow British subjects.

Tucking your bomb into your knapsack, you take an Exit Ticket from the nearby console. You wipe a bead of perspiration from your brow and step onto that creaking gantry. You hear footsteps behind you… a terrible hammering sound… and then a scream. Someone or something is heading your way! Hurry! The clock is ticking… and so is that bomb.
